Step-by-Step: Let’s Fingerpaint!
Step 1: Choose Your Colors
In this tutorial, Alisha used primary colors to make use of color blending and mixing, but you can use any colors you like. Start with your lightest color and work your way up.
Step 2: Fingerpaint!
Using your fingers, paint scribbles onto the canvas. Don’t think too hard about it, just play around with colors and shapes wherever you want them to go.
Step 3: Layer Your Colors
Clean your hands in between each color, then take a new color paint and add another layer on top of the first. Again, Alisha stuck with primary colors, but you can add as many color as you want! Add white to brighten the colors, or go back over with another layer in the colors of your choice.
Step 4: Appreciate Your Work!
Once you let the paints dry, use it as a background for another art work, or frame it and hang it on the wall!
Why You Should Incorporate Fingerpainting into Your Art Lessons
- Removes the Fear of Perfection – Without the need for brushes, fingerpainting feels more spontaneous, helping artists let go of perfectionism and embrace creativity.
- Engages the Senses – The tactile experience of painting with you hands helps to stimulate the senses, making the creative process more immersive and intuitive.
- Breaks Creative Blocks – Fingerpainting allows for uninhibited self-expression, and is an excellent way to overcome creative blocks by thinking outside of the box!
- Encourages Playful Thinking – Play is an essential part of creativity, and fingerpainting makes art feel like an enjoyable, lighthearted experience, rather than a structure task.
