Frida Kahlo's birthday is tomorrow, and her self-p Frida Kahlo's birthday is tomorrow, and her self-portraits offer an interesting peak into her inner world. Throughout her life, Frida endured a great deal of physical and emotional pain from accidents and physical ailments. As such, painting became an outlet for self expression, and she channeled her emotions onto the canvas, using them to express her deepest thoughts and emotions with vibrant colors and imagery. Over the course of her life, Frida painted 55 self-portraits, and her intense gaze and striking features (such as the ever-present unibrow and frequent mustache) have made a lasting impact on the world of art today.

In this Selfie Portraits art lesson, we paint in the Surrealism style, imitating Frida Kahlo by focusing on themes and imagery that are personal to us.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist from the Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist from the 18th century. He was a painter and printmaker during the Edo period and is most famous for his prints The Great Wave, as well as his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.

The Great Wave is immediately recognizable for the dynamic shape of the water, which Hokusai captured mid-crest just before it comes crashing down. In the print you will notice that he put emphasis on curved lines that all seem to follow a single, sweeping arc, drawing your eye from one side of the page to the other.

In this Art Escapades lesson we will recreate The Great Wave in markers, making use of lines and colors to capture the dynamic shape and motion of the wave.
