American Flag Art Lesson

Want a Super Fun Flag Day Art Lesson for Your Homeschool?

Flag Day is more than just stars and stripes, it’s an invitation to celebrate the unique character and history of the United States through art. On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution that established the stars and stripes as the official flag of the United States. And so we celebrate to honor the history, symbolism, and unity represented by the flag as we reflect on American values and national pride.

Flag Day is an American holiday, but if you live in another country, we encourage you to reimagine this lesson with your own national flag! So whether you live in the U.S. or in another corner of the globe, this project is easy to adapt and full of opportunities for personalization.

American Flag Art Lesson Step by Step:

1. Sketch the Flag Layout
Start by lightly sketching your flag’s outline. If you’re creating a version of the American flag, include 13 stripes and space for 50 stars (or polka dots!). If you’re creating your own country’s flag, use its basic design, but feel free to add your own personal flair!

2. Paint Broad Stripes of Color
Choose your color palette. For example, start with red, white, and blue, but blend them with related hues—pink and orange for red, silver for white, purple and teal for blue. Paint freely, allowing colors to overlap and mix.

3. Add Abstract Flair
Use swirls, zigzags, polka dots, or soft brush strokes to build layers of texture and movement. Let your instincts lead you—there’s no wrong way to express your flag in this project!

4. Create the Star Field
Fill the blue area with polka dots or small star shapes. You can outline them in black or gold and brighten them with white paint or markers afterward.

5. Detail with Markers or Pens
Once your painting is dry, go back in with paint pens or markers. Add whimsical doodles, swirly designs, or any extra touches that bring your piece to life.
