Not only is this art project for kids a great way to welcome the season, it’s one all ages and abilities can enjoy. Better still, it’s easy to take the general idea and use it to welcome fall with your own creative flair!
Easy Fall Art for Kids
Here’s what you’ll need to get started with our fall art project:
Supplies Needed
- Canvas (We used 12 x 12 squares, but a rectangular canvas will also work.)
- Craft paints
- Paint brushes
- Black paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Mod Podge
- White gel pen
- White paint pen (optional)
- Leaf template (optional)
That list probably looks pretty hefty for an easy fall art project, but don’t let it throw you off. You probably have most of these already if you keep a decent stash of art supplies on hand. 😉
You’ll also want to choose a verse, quote, or poem about fall for step 3 before you start. If you don’t have a poem in mind, choose a quote from BrainyQuote or write a haiku about fall.
Step 1 – Paint the canvas.
There’s lots of room for creativity with this step, but take a moment to think about the colors of fall before selecting painting. Also, consider blending several colors together or creating a pattern for the background.
Once you’ve got an idea of your desired background, paint the canvas accordingly.
Step 2 – Prepare the cutout.
While the canvas dries, use your pencil to draw a leaf onto a sheet of black paper and use your scissors to cut it out. Worth noting, you can use a sheet of black scrapbook paper, cardstock, or even construction paper for this step. (I used scrapbook paper, but my kiddo used construction paper for hers.)
You can use our leaf template to make this part a bit easier or create your own leaf cutout. If you use our template, simply print it, cut it out, and use it to trace a leaf onto your black paper. Then cut it out and place it to the side.
Step 3 – Add text.
Next, use the white gel pen to write a quote, verse, or poem about autumn onto the black leaf. You can use some fun hand lettering techniques here or simply write as usual.
Then, add Mod Podge to the back of the leaf and press it onto the dried canvas. Note that you can use a paint brush or sponge brush for this step, but you’ll want to use one that’s only used for Mod Podge application and not painting.
Step 4 Add accents.
After the Mod Podge dries, outline the leaf with a white paint pen or black Sharpie. Then, apply another layer of Mod Podge to the entire project to seal it. When it dries, your colorful fall art project is ready to display or share!
