Since this Homeschool Art blog is brand spanking new, I thought I’d give you a little bit of a background on how its name, Masterpiece Society, came about.
So first of all, you have to understand that one of my favorite scriptures is Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) which says,
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
I love the picture this paints in my mind of God as the Master Artist carefully designing, creating, sculpting, and painting us, His “masterpieces.”
Far too many people (women especially) don’t feel like masterpieces, and yet this is exactly what we are. I wrote about this on Flourish years ago when I first began to blog. And I just haven’t been able to get away from the desire to teach women and teenage girls how beautiful, valuable, and precious we are to the Lord — whether it’s through blogging or teaching art courses.
But I first used the name “Masterpiece Society” a couple years ago as the name of my monthly newsletter and print subscription over at Flourish. I would write a short devotion, create a beautiful chalkboard art or mixed media print, a monthly hand-painted calendar, as well as bookmarks, gift tags, and other downloadable goodies that I designed and painted to send out to my subscribers.
That got really old after about eight months. With everything else I had going on in my life, creating the monthly goodies added TONS of stress and strain. I immediately re-evaluated my goals and decided to discontinue it all.
I still loved that name.
Then recently, after I began advertising my latest online art course, Mixing with the Masters, Volume One (which, by the way, is ON SALE through July 31st), I had such an overwhelming response from fellow bloggers and homeschooling moms that I decided it was time to move all my art courses from Flourish to their own home – a blog that could be specifically devoted to all things homeschool ART – especially for older kids, tweens and teens.
I was trying to think up a name, so I asked my resident 14-year old wordsmith, Liam if he had any suggestions. He said, “Why not use ‘Masterpiece Society?'”
Um, why didn’t I think of that???
The name encompasses everything I want this site to be: a place where God’s masterpieces can come together to create our own masterpieces!
My desire is that the Masterpiece Society becomes a community for homeschoolers – older kids, teens, and yes, moms too – to be encouraged in our artistic pursuits.
Here I will offer TONS of freebies: Artist Study PDFs, Art Technique lessons and PDFs, video tutorials, PLUS a weekly Art Challenge beginning Friday, September 2nd to encourage your older kids and teens to create on a regular basis for the pure and simple joy of doing so!
